There is something to be said for the idea of graphics being simple and abstract icons (to leave it to your imagination) and based off solid colors instead of detailed textures, but ASCII just takes it too far and makes it far too abstract. Oh not at all ASCII I find really messy and hard to read, I prefer graphics. I sense an orthodox ASCII superiority supporter. I'm not sure how much time there will be later for this kind of project, but I have the structure of the old saves, so I should be able to be of use to any community project that arises, and maybe we'll be able to get to it. A lot has changed, more than I was expecting when I started. Toady One: It looks like it would be pretty time-consuming at this point. Actually, in another part of this FotF Toady is rather unsure old saves will be transferrable (at release). ”he saves should be compatible between the Premium and Classic versions” does not mean saves from 0.47 will be transferrable to either Premium or Classic. Despite this, there is some intuition to calling the current versions ”classic”, so you run into the risk of certain confusions. The actual missing name is that of the current Dwarf Fortress, the ascii shoddy-gui versions before the Steam/itch.io release. Well we have Dwarf Fortress Classic for that, the free versions that will recieve updates concurrently with Premium. Categorize DF as this kind treat DF as one of the premium games that "doesn't cross the line". The line that compromises user fairness or individual experience is there in the freemium strategy path, but games don't have to cross it. But not all premium games have to be predatory or put other players at an unplayable disadvantage. Now by nature, the premium version will ALWAYS contain something that puts it in advantage to the free one, some way or another DF will be no different in this regard. Of course calling DF premium means it'll be categorized with other premium games that are better described as "p2w" or "predatory", which is I guess the heart of your issue. Call it for what it is, don't muddle the meaning. I prefer not beating around the bush in these kind of things. It technically does fall under freemium/premium, even if the only things behind the paywall are art & music assets (+ a few UI elements that are unable to be translated to the ascii one).
